Welcome to the Daily Decant, your five-minute briefing on the world of wine. Each episode delivers practical insights to help you choose, order, and talk about wine with more confidence in everyday social settings. Let's get into today's decant. Today's episode is going to be a little more personal. I've had some feedback from listeners saying that they want to know more about me, how I got into wine, and why I started this podcast in the first place. And honestly, I think that makes a ton of sense because if you're spending a few minutes here with me each episode, it's only fair I share a little bit more about who I am and what inspired all of this. The truth is, the daily decant came from a very real place in my own life. I found myself in a lot of situations where wine was part of the experience and I wanted to feel more confident and educated around it. Maybe it was going out to dinner, being in a social event, a work or investor event, which is something that I've done a lot in my past. Maybe it's bringing a bottle to someone's home, or even just looking at wine lists and realizing, gosh, I wanted to know more than I did. So I didn't need to become an expert overnight, but I did want to feel more informed. I wanted to be able to make a good choice, ask a thoughtful question, and understand what I was ordering or serving without overthinking it. And I think a lot of people can relate to that. So I'm a millennial and I thought, you know what, there's a lot of people that I've met just like me, and I think that this could be an interesting thing to provide. So there are so many moments in life where wine shows up, and just knowing even a little bit can make you feel so much more comfortable and confident. It can make a dinner feel easier, and it can make a gift feel more intentional. It can make a conversation feel more natural. For me, that was really the starting point. I was interested in wine not because I wanted some highly technical hobby, but I wanted to feel more confident in real-world situations. And this is where that all really began. So I was looking for a quick, practical way to learn, something that fit into real life and something I could listen to or learn from without having to carve out hours of time to study. I wanted something more approachable, useful, and relevant, and I wanted the kind of context that could help me understand a wine region, grape, or style in a way that actually mattered the next time I was at a restaurant, traveling, hosting, or bringing a bottle of dinner. But I really couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. A lot of wine education felt either too technical or too time consuming, and it often seemed built for people who wanted to go very deep, very fast. And while I totally respect that world, that was just not what I needed at the moment. I wanted practical knowledge, I wanted short, clear insights that could help me build confidence over time, and maybe a quick fun fact or two that I could share at dinner. So I decided to create the thing that I had been looking for. That became the Daily Decant. This podcast is really built for people like me, and maybe like you too. People who are curious about wine, who want to know more, who appreciate the social side of it, who see how often it comes up in dinners, celebrations, work events, and travel, but also have busy lives and don't necessarily want to spend all their free time studying wine. So I think there are a lot of people who want to feel knowledgeable without being overwhelmed. And they just want to know what to order when they don't recognize anything on a wine list. That's exactly who I created this for. On a personal level, I'm also still very much learning. Right now I'm doing my wine and spirit education trust, level one, hopefully going to continue through level two as well. And one of the things I'm excited about is being able to share that learning journey in a way that feels accessible and useful. Not from a place of pretending to know everything, but from a place of genuine curiosity and real growth. And I think that matters. Because sometimes the best kind of learning is not being talked at by someone who is 10 steps ahead and speaking a language that feels out of reach. Sometimes it's learning alongside of someone who's deeply interested, actively building knowledge, and committed to making it practical. And that's how I want this podcast to feel. I also care a lot about the connection between wine and travel. For me, wine is not just about what's in the glass, it's about where it comes from, the people behind it, the culture around it, and the places connected to it. I love the idea of pairing a growing understanding of wine with traveling to different regions around the world and experiencing those places more fully. That's a big part of what inspires me. So far, I've been to Napa a couple times. I've been to the Stellenbosch region in South Africa. I've gone to the Champagne region in France. And I even lived in the Columbia Valley wine region in Washington for a year. I'm excited to do another France or Italy trip later this year. And I just really enjoy visiting the beautiful countrysides where wine is grown and meeting all the fun people and you know pairing it with all the amazing food. So wine can be a way into a place. It can help you understand a region differently, and it can make a trip more memorable. It can connect food, like I mentioned, culture, conversation, in a way that feels really rich and human. And over time, that's just something I wanted to explore more through this podcast, too. As this show grows, my hope is that it becomes more than just a quick wine education. I want it to become a platform for confidence, discovery, and eventually access to interesting opportunities, interesting bottles, and interesting wine releases that people may not otherwise come across. I want to build something that starts with practical knowledge and grows into something that helps people discover more of the wine world in an approachable but exciting way. And at the core of it, the mission's simple. I want to make wine feel less intimidating. I want to make it easier for people to walk into a restaurant, dinner party, wine shop, and feel like they have a baseline of confidence. I want people to enjoy more wine because they understand it a little bit better. And I want this podcast to be something that fits into real life. Listening to it on your way to the grocery store, on your way home from work, whatever it might be. So if you've been listening and wondering who's behind the mic, that's a little bit more about me, Lauren, and a little bit more about why this exists. I'm someone who wants practical wine knowledge, couldn't find it in the format I needed, and decided to build it. And now I get to share that journey with you, which is honestly one of the most exciting parts of doing this. I'm really glad you're here. And that's today's Daily Decant. If you found this helpful, be sure to subscribe and share with your friends so you can continue building your wine knowledge in just a few minutes of day.
