Welcome to the Daily Decant, your five-minute briefing on the world of wine. Each episode delivers practical insights to help you choose, order, and talk about wine with more confidence and everyday social settings. Let's get into today's decant. Sundays wrap. Let's talk about what this week actually taught us. We spent six episodes in the Rhone Valley, moving from north to south, from the steep granite hillsides of Cote Roti, all the way down to the sun-baked plateau of Châtenu des Popes and the lesser known villages around it. We covered red wines, white wine, value appellations, and legendary estates. Today I want to pull the key lessons together, give you my personal top five bottles from the week, and leave you with a practical cheat sheet that you can actually use next time you're standing in a wine shop or looking at a restaurant list. Here are four big lessons from the Roan this week. Lesson one, the Roan is not one thing. This came up on Monday and it's worth repeating on Sunday because it's the foundation of everything else. The North and the South are completely different climates, different grapes, different winemaking philosophies, and different styles. When someone tells you they like Rhone wine, it's like saying they like French food. The next question always has to be which part? Lesson two. If you've only ever tried New World Syrah, you have not yet made the grapes full range. A bottle of Crow's Hermitage from Javoule or Griot is one of the most affordable ways to discover what Northern Rhone Syrah actually is. Lesson three. The best value in the Southern Rhone is not Chatenux de Pope, it's Bacaria's, gigandas, and Rosto. These three appellations produce wines with genuine Southern Rhone character at prices that Chateau stopped offering years ago. If you remember nothing else from this week, remember those three names. Lesson four. The Rhone makes serious white wine that most wine drinkers have never tried. Condria from Bionnier is one of the most singular aromatic experiences in all of white wine. White Hermitage from Marseille and Roussin is among the most ageworthy wines in France. Both are hiding in plain sight on wine shop shelves, waiting for someone to pay attention to them. Now my personal top five from the week. Number one Jean Louis Chaff Hermitage Rouge The Benchmark. The wine that reminds you what Syrah was before the rest of the world discovered it. Number two, Chateau des Beaucastel Chatenuf de Paupe, the wine that started the whole week and earned its place in the top of the Grand Tour as well. three Domain de Chiron Gigondas, the discovery of the week for the value in the character. Number four, Georges Vernay, Condro Cote Vernon, the white wine that will change what you think the Rhone is. And number five, Paul Jabulet Annais. Crow's Hermitage Domain de Taliber is the practical choice, the one to put in your regular rotation. And there's your three sentence cheat sheet for the wine shop or the restaurant. The Rhone Valley has two distinct parts. North makes it structured, Syrah on deep granite hillsides, and the south makes Grenache dominant blends on flat, stone covered plains. For northern Rhone value, look for Crow's Armitage or San Joseph. For southern Rhone value, skip Shotzanouf and go straight to Gigondas, Vacarayas, and Rosto. That's the Rhone in three sentences, and you're welcome to use it. Next week we're moving on, new region, new set of wines, and a new set of things worth knowing. Thanks for spending the week here. We'll see you Monday. That's today's Daily Decant.
